Chinese cities’ landscapes are rapidly changing and Guangzhou is no exception. Xian is a village located in the centre of the Zhujiang New Town area, where some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world are being built.
Xian Village is being demolished and its inhabitants kicked out as part of Guangzhou’s ongoing city development.
The whole neighbourhood was not long ago populated by little villages that have all but one disappeared in the name of real estate progress. Villagers find themselves in the middle of it all, burdened by an uncertain future.
Some have accepted to leave in exchange for the promise of a better place to live. Some others have refused to do so and, as a result, are currently living amongst the debris of the demolished homes of their former neighbours.
